I have thought about doing a juice cleanse for about a year now but have never quite been ready to take the plunge. There is a part of me that thinks detoxing and cleansing isn’t necessary when you eat a generally healthy balanced diet. There is also a part of me that doesn’t always eat a healthy balanced diet (those of you who live in the southern hemisphere know that the festive season doesn’t really end until March) so when the amazing Annette of Pure Glow Cleanse asked if I wanted to try a 1-day cleanse I absolutely jumped at the chance.
I was so so excited in the lead up, until the day before when I got super nervous and thought I would never last. I know it was only a day, but I don’t deal well with hunger, in fact I’m pretty sure the term hangry was invented for me, and I don’t let myself get hungry often. While I eat pretty healthily, I eat a lot. I snack all day long. I also love love love coffee. How was I going to make it through the day without one!?
It turns out, the cleanse was super easy, the juices were delicious and I absolutely loved it. I didn’t feel hungry at all during the day, maybe it helped that I was busy so didn’t have time to think about food, but I honestly felt full and content throughout the day, and that was after an hour long training session in the morning. I sipped the juices slowly and most of them lasted about 1 to 1.5 hours (they are nice and big at about 500mls), and the PGC team recommend having a juice about every 2 hours, so I found myself with something to sip on all day long. The cute straws from PGC helped too!
Oh and I barely even missed my coffee, though I did have two the next day, more on that later though!
I genuinely liked the flavour of every single juice, and absolutely loved the flavour of a couple, the Good Karma in particular. The Sunrise Elixir was certainly a little more lemony than anything I would usually make myself, but it turned out to be the perfect way to kick-start the day. I love cucumber in juice, something that a lot of people don’t like, but I think that helped to balance out the lemon. I have no idea what aloe is meant to taste like but all in this juice was yummy and made my morning hunger go away.
The Glowing Greens juice was nice and earthy and just what I needed after the tangy Sunrise Elixir. The avocado made it beautiful and thick and the pear flavour much yummier than I would have expected. The thickness of this one almost made me feel like I could chew it, and it filled me up until lunch time.
Number three, the Green Guru, had pretty similar ingredients to the Glowing Greens but tasted totally different. It is amazing the difference an avocado can make to the texture! You could really taste the apple and lemon in this one.
Number four was the Good Karma which was the perfect way to break up the green juices. This was probably my favourite, being a sucker for ginger and also a huge fan of carrot juice, I knew it would be one of my favourites as soon as I laid eyes on it. I know a lot of people don’t like ginger in juices but this wasn’t overpowering at all, and the grapefruit in the good karma is absolute perfection.
Number 5 was back to the greens with a Buddha Juice full of cucumber, apple, mint and lime. To be honest all the green juices had started blurring together by this stage but I remember having my first sip and being pretty happy with it. I had half of this one while I finished up my day at work, then I took it home and finished it off as dinner and it got me through easily. I was full enough to wait about 3 hours form the time I started this one until I moved on to the last.
Last but certainly not least was the Vanilla Chai Dream. This was the only one I just couldn’t refrain from drinking down in about 20 minutes. I think by that stage in the day I was ready for something a little more creamy and got a bit excited. As I said, I waited longer than the recommended two hours before I started on this one and let myself get a bit hungry.
I did have a moment after this last juice where I seriously considered eating some fruit, but I realised I probably wanted to eat because I usually snack after dinner, not because I was actually hungry. So I went to be bed early and didn’t think about it again.
I felt a little light headed during the day but I functioned as well as I normally do. I probably wouldn’t suggest doing a cleanse on a really big day full of important meetings, but on a normal work day it was fine and I actually got a lot done. I also think I would have faced a lot more temptation to eat if I had too much spare time on my hands. Having said this, I eat pretty well most of the time so I didn’t experience those nasty side-effects like headaches.
I woke up the next day feeling refreshed and energised, I even considered getting up and going for a run, but then my legs felt a little wobbly and I thought I should refuel before doing any high impact exercise. I tried to avoid coffee the next day but someone brought a spare one into work from one of my favourite coffee shops and I couldn’t let it go to waste, so I am feeling a bit guilty that maybe I ruined the after effects, but still I felt pretty good.
The 1-day cleanse was the perfect little teaser and I am so keen to try a longer one now. My only concern about doing a longer one is that it will stop me from doing my usual exercise routine which is fairly high impact, has anyone had experience exercising while doing a cleanse? All in all, it was a fantastic experience and it made me remember that anyone can do just about anything for a day, I don’t know why I was so worried!
Thanks to the Pure Glow Cleanse team for the beautiful quality of the juices. If you want to give it a go, head over to their website and look around.
